Never before the iPhone did I care much about a cellphone, it was merely an appliance that did a basic function. And so, upgrading every two years or so was not an issue.

However, when I purchased my iPhone two years ago, I now cannot imagine doing without it. The ability to carry an advanced smartphone with the internet, calendar, camera, ipod, and phone all in one package is just short of asounding. Not only does it make my personal life more enjoyable, but its been a great business tool that helps me make money. The productivity my iPhone allows is just amazing.

So, after having bought the 3G last year, and now facing a unsubsidized price of $599 for a 16gb 3GS now, or a $399 price in about a month, its a no brainer for either price given the value of this platform is to me.

In fact, going for the full retail price now without a contract extension actually makes more sense, as it allows me to upgrade next year at the full discounted price, when the new iPhone with even better hardware is released.

And that may be the best strategy, ebay the old one every year, and average out over two years the subsidized discount. Between that and what I get by selling it, I'm most likely nearly breaking even, not to mention the sheer enjoyment of using this wonderful platform.

599 or 699 for:

1) A bit more storage - I am only at 2 GIG used of an 8 GIG phone.

2) Video Recording - I have a very expensive cam corder upstairs collecting dust.

3) 1 extra MP on the camera - Again, I have a very expensive camera upstairs collecting dust as well.

4) Voice Controls - I admit, I will be bummed not having this.

5) A Compass - Probably would never use it and it is not needed for the TomTom software that is coming anyway.

6) A tad better battery - I make it a whole day now, so this really doesn't mean much to me. I am guessing it is the same battery since the 3G talk time is identical on both phones.

7) Faster overall phone - My current 3G really doesn't lag that much.

So, 699 for a bit more storage and Voice Controls is what it comes down to in my mind.

Pfffffffffffffft.

Not happening.

The ONLY way I upgrade is if ATT can get it to me fully subsidized for 199, and even then, I am not sold on getting it.

To each his own.

I think I can resist this update and wait until the next revision in the iPhone lineup. I'll put my money towards a nice new MBP.

When you have money, everything seems worth the price.

But, when you're on a tight budget, you tend to question everything. ;)

It's worth about what the subsidized price is.

Only the $99 3g is a deal.

The other subsidized prices are fairly priced.

The unsubsidized prices are horrible you would have to rich or a idiot to think that is worth $699 for a phone.

Well said. I'm just selling another phone to pay for this one. . . if people don't have the funds don't mess up your life over it. Some of you have the 3G IMO there's no real reason to upgrade.

so not into music then?
I could use as much space on the iphone as they offer as I have 90gigs of music alone. Add apps and other stuff, I would never come close to using only 2 gigs...

I think alot of us are forgetting that the new apps with voice commands and the willingness for apple to be less restrictive in using their port will allow an amazing array of new accessories, that will give us great new hardware as well.

Not as much as you evidently. :D

I have 192 songs on there though, and I use it to listen to music when I exercise and sometimes in my truck.

i like the extra space and the new camera. I'm really hoping to see a nice performance boost because even on wifi a lot of apps are slow (mail, safari). I'm still debating getting the new one, because i'm really curious to see the some reviews before i buy it and how much someone will buy my 16gb 3g phone for :)

600 and 700 is a bit extreme for a phone. 399 is all i'm willing to spend, and thats what im playing on getting...16 gb white.

$700 for an iPhone 3G S is out of this world. The 3GS is merely a half step forward, and one to the side. I'll wait until the iPhone is ready to make the leap.

Not to mention, you'll be back here wanting the next iPhone next year. :apple:

Oh? And what do you think this leap will be?? Please descrip the leap you think would have made you get the 3GS?

Maybe if the iPhone 3GS was made out of solid gold and cooked me breakfast, it would be worth it, but if I were eligible for the full subsidy, I could barely justify the $199 for the 3GS, much less $599

*SIGH*

Do I really need to pick this apart? I'd wish a lot of people keep their opinions to themselves, instead of spreading bad information that may or may not be true. Digg or Reddit may be a better place for your unmerited claims.

599 or 699 for:
1) A bit more storage - I am only at 2 GIG used of an 8 GIG phone.

Then go buy a Razr.

2) Video Recording - I have a very expensive cam corder upstairs collecting dust.
All this means is its too much of a pain in your ass to go upstairs to get your camcorder. The iphone is something you carry with you, which is why its EASY to use and convenient.. Isn't this the whole purpose of all this?

3) 1 extra MP on the camera - Again, I have a very expensive camera upstairs collecting dust as well.
You bought the camera for a reason right? Because sometimes you'll want to use it. Now its even easier to get a good quality photo without having to go dust off your camera. Why is this a bad thing? I hope your not trying to make this a con?

4) Voice Controls - I admit, I will be bummed not having this.

+1 for the 3GS

5) A Compass - Probably would never use it and it is not needed for the TomTom software that is coming anyway.
It may not be necessary, but it doesn't hurt does it? If you bought the phone, would you ask to have the compass removed? If not, then what is your point? The compass can be worked into MANY custom apps made by developers... Do I hear someone actually complainging about a possibly VERY good feature they are getting as an extra??

6) A tad better battery - I make it a whole day now, so this really doesn't mean much to me. I am guessing it is the same battery since the 3G talk time is identical on both phones.
This is a bad example. A therefore B is not applicable here. Or maybe your forgetting to highlight that the new 3g works on the new 7.2mbps network? with a faster 3g chip?

7) Faster overall phone - My current 3G really doesn't lag that much.
It is a improvement that can be multiple times faster. Thats more than an upgrade. Think about how much faster most computers are? If I buy a 3.0 ghz processor, i'm not bitching when the next processor intel sells is less than 10ghz. People are willing to pay for completely new computers when there are minor, subtle changes to the hardware.

So, 699 for a bit more storage and Voice Controls is what it comes down to in my mind.

Pfffffffffffffft.

pfffffft? Do you have an attitude problem? Do you have a stutter? Not happening? Great! One less person in front of me at the line. I wouldn't have made this post if it wasn't for the seemingly spiteful approach on what has been done by apple. if you don't like it, Fine! Thats great. There are lots of things I don't want to buy as well. But to PFFFT it and scoff and piss and whine noone wants to hear that. Please keep that to yourself? Expressing opinion is by all means good too. But again, the PFFT PSSHH attitude really triggered me here. It just has been building up with all these people complaining and whining about the price. If you can't afford it DON'T BUY IT! I can afford it, I am lucky enough to be able to justify the price. "I AM APPLES TARGETED MARKET". If you want to complain or PSSH PFFT anyone, you should make a new post about not meeting apples demographics. Not about how the iPhone isn't justifiable, because it is to many people. Just not you.

The ONLY way I upgrade is if ATT can get it to me fully subsidized for 199, and even then, I am not sold on getting it.
The reality, is they would prefer you keep your current phone. and finish out your contract, let them make their earnings, then sign you up in 2 years. So its not like your spiting them or anything, your just completing your contract you agreed to anyway. Its not like you are 'owed' an early upgrade for free.

To each his own.
By this, do you mean you don't like the Phone? Or the price? Thats two very different things. Maybe you should complain about the thickness of your wallet instead? Because we could argue semantics all day and determine what the true definition of value is, to whom, and when. I'm going to start a thread and complain that sega didn't offer a $1 sega genesis when I was younger because thats all I had. It was ludicrous that they would ask $100+!!! This is what you sound like right now. Pony up, or high tail out.

And yes, you are very true on this one. If the Ferrari doesn't fit my needs I dont buy it.

PFFFT! 600 horsepower! Who the hell needs that. PFFFFT! $250k! Not until they give me a ferarri for the price of my ford focus will I EVER upgrade. I'm not sold Ferrarri! Try again, FAIL!

Its the people that call into customer service call centers with these I AM THE CONSUMER RUB MY FEET attitude that makes the customer service people a bitch to deal with in the first place. Who the hell wants to deal with a customer that thinks everything should be free. Its not, Its not always something we can afford, and when its not, thats it. Nothing you can do except complain or act like someone is trying to scam you or take advantage of you, but like i've seen posted here many times. Noone is forcing your hand, and the real reason you should be mad, is you can't afford the premium to hold the latest in apple's gadgets. Your greed to have the newest shiniest of apples GOOD products is what makes you upset. If their products weren't all that great, you wouldn't waste your time doing this. If their products are great enough to make you wish you could afford them, then that right there tells you that they are doing a good job.

Stop trying to justify the reasons of dishing out $699 for iphone 3gs. You are just attacking his questions like a kid while unable to pose any real arguments. If you are an eager fan of Apple everything Apple does will seem to make sense to you because you are biased.

Now read closely. SPEC-WISE: $699 or $599 for the iphone 3GS specs is NOT worth it. Period. Let me remind you, SPEC-WISE. There's no argument to this. You and I, and we all know that iPhone is behind in the cellphone market spec-wise. There's no denying in this.

Fortunately for us, Apple's UI and friendliness of the device has been the bigger factor in the competition. And I admit this because iPhones are the most comfortable and user friendly phones that I've ever used as well. The problem with the other high spec phones is that despite their high-end features, the softwares or applications do not and cannot utilize it efficiently.

I just heard that Nokia N97 is released today for around $600 dollars. The phone is a spec giant yet priced around the same ballpark as the $599 or $699 iphone 3gs. So spec-wise the iphone is a no match.

Also, don't give me that R&D fund ******** for the Apple softwares because it's not only Apple putting in dollars trying to develop user friendly interfaces.

What about reception. If the new chip is that much better than its worth it. Forget about compass and voice commands.

My phone is a joke, with no exageration. It will show 5 bars 3g, phone call comes in and it immediately drops to gprs in 1 second. Get off call and in 1 second edge and then 5 bars 3g. Only exception is on weekends.

ATT needs to deploy the 3g voice only exclusion to free up network.

All the connection changes just eat my battery up.

Ok Thats It I Am Starting A 4g Iphone Expectation Thread

Hahahah

Someone will do this right?!

Lets jerk each other off for 1 more year of speculation, lol.

Or maybe we can just settle in and enjoy our revolutionary phones..............

Stupid comment. No need to respond to nonsense liek this.

Where did I say it was bad? I said it doesn't justify me paying 700 bucks for a phone.

I would love to see a true justification for paying 700 for a friggin cell phone. Personally, I think anyone doing that is just plain dumb. You don't like my opinion? Too bad.

So its not like your spiting them or anything, your just completing your contract you agreed to anyway. Its not like you are 'owed' an early upgrade for free.
Don't sit here an lecture me on what the company that I worked for for seven years wants me to do. I know EXACTLY what they want me to do thank you very much.
By this, do you mean you don't like the Phone? Or the price? Thats two very different things. Maybe you should complain about the thickness of your wallet instead? What do I mean by this?

I mean unless you are set for retirement, your kids' college is payed for, and you are relatively dept free, you would have to be a complete MORON to pay $700 for a CELL PHONE that will be out of date in a year.

But, to each his own...

Clear enough for you?
And yes, you are very true on this one. If the Ferrari doesn't fit my needs I dont buy it.

Once again, you know nothing of which you speak.

Don't sit here and pretend like you know MY situation.

First of all, I have been an AT&T customer since they were known as BellSouth Mobility and were featuring the StarTAC (Which I owned).

Second of all, I own two 3G iPhones that I payed FULL price for as well as a Blackberry and 2 regular phones on my family plan.

Third of all, people who have been customers less time than me, with less phones on their plan than me, and pay less per month than me, are getting price quotes of $399 and $499 from the web site.

So excuse the me if I think it is a bit messed up that I have to pay $699 for the phone.

2) Video Recording - I have a very expensive cam corder upstairs collecting dust.

3) 1 extra MP on the camera - Again, I have a very expensive camera upstairs collecting dust as well..

As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you, and its a better quality camera than the old one.

I'm content to wait for the 4G iPhone and (hopefully) the opportunity to go back to Verizon. I love my iPhone 3G and can't wait for 3.0, but I'm not the least bit interested in spending $199, $299, $399 or $499 (or even $99) to "upgrade" the hardware.

Well said. I'm just selling another phone to pay for this one. . . if people don't have the funds don't mess up your life over it. Some of you have the 3G IMO there's no real reason to upgrade.

Amen. I sure as heck wasn't spending $500 or $600 for the original iPhone, and I sure as heck wouldn't change that now. It's a great device, but it's not even close to worth $600 unless you swim in a money bin. People expect $600 computers to last more than a year, let alone a cell phone.

I'm upgrading because it's been more than 2.5 years since I got a subsidized phone and I waited patiently as the iPhone 3G came out and prices kept dropping. I can't use my 8GB model to keep most the songs I want on here, along with video, photos and larger apps.

Have a little patience, young grasshoppers. Save the extra $600 every year toward something else when you have a perfectly good phone (if you have the 3G, that's what you have). That'll pay your Internet service bill for an entire year.

You're willing to pay $500 for 16GB, a better camera, a faster processor, more RAM and a compass?

This place brings in the most ridiculous people.

*SIGH*

Do I really need to pick this apart? I'd wish a lot of people keep their opinions to themselves, instead of spreading bad information that may or may not be true. Digg or Reddit may be a better place for your unmerited claims.
The poster wasn't saying that the new iPhone is bad, but it definitely isn't worth paying $500 if you already have a 3G, you're barely getting anything for $500 in that case.

I just bought the iphone 3g in February, I haven't run into storage issues yet, the phone is plenty fast for me, a compass seems pointless to me and I'll live without it. As for the video recorder, I can accomplish that with jailbreaking and have found that I barely use it. The only thing that I will really miss is that I won't have voice control, but I think I'll manage without it.

I think I'll wait until the next iphone is released, probably next June, and upgrade then when I won't have to pay the unsubsidized price and the phone will have better features. 2010 should be a good year for me- I am going to graduate from high school, go to college, and go all Apple by getting a Macbook and a new iphone. Now I am more excited for June 2010 than the 3.0 release that is coming out in a little more than a week.
