Evernote business model?

Evernote looks nice. I can't understand how they offer all this cross platform software for free. Their privacy page seems reasonable, but I still can't help wonder who has access to my notes, and/or why they'd want them. The idea of giving my notes to a company, ANY company creeps me out a little.
