good evening.
Im part of a group message thread in iMessage with family members and every morning we all begin to send each messages. Considering we all live in different parts of the country and have different lives, these messages come in randomly, sometimes 1 at a time or a slew in a matter of seconds.

I know Do Not Distirb exists but considering it is 12:15am at night right now, I am desperately wanting to sleep in tomorrow morning. Rather than just turn this feature on tomorrow (and though this would successfully allow me to get a good nights/mornings rest) I would also like to add the goal that I want the family members to know I’m okay; perhaps like an automated iMessage response saying “I’m sleeping right now.” The reason it’s a big deal is cause ever since everyone in the family came on board with an iPhone and Apple introduced all those security/health features, we’ve all been adamant about always keeping our phones ON and if we’re busy to send back that “I can’t talk right now” message. Usually we’re all pretty good about replying within an hour at the most.

Considering I haven’t properly closed my eyes in just about 56 hours, I’m ready to go home and fall asleep the moment I crash on my bed for at least 9 - 10 hours. Which explains why I am seeking for some kind of solution regarding all this.

Thanks.

Mute, as suggested, or set DND for a schedule to stop at a time you expect to be up. There is no automated response other than when using DND while driving. You would have to look at some other messaging app/system for that. Everyone has different needs but family members that can’t compensate for different time zones is a little odd. We don’t get any notifications before 6am which is when we’re usually up. We have contact settings on for a couple individuals whose calls will get through if there’s an emergency. I’d hate to have to be essentially “on call/message” every hour. Again, everyone’s needs are different.

It’s insane to me that your family can’t comprehend that you *sleep* at times and therefore can’t reply at times. What? DND it up, and stop coddling this absurdity.

Absolutely this! Your whole situation is desperately unhealthy for all involved...especially for you. You and your family’s obsession with keeping in touch constantly can lead to nothing good.

I would suggest that this having to contact everyone every morning every day is kicked in to touch...it’s not normal (IMHO). And yeah, as others have said, use (scheduled) DND!

Classic iPhone addiction.
How's that? Not everyone lives in the same time zone, and the iPhone has multiple features to enable the complete silencing of text alerts: DND, thread muting, airplane mode, etc.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, but our family threads are even worse - multiple time zones in the US, and me in Tokyo. I tell people not to worry about the time zone though - my phone is on scheduled DND every night so it's all good.

I'm confused, this seems like a social problem not a technical one?

Just tell them that you're sleeping in? If they have a problem with that they're the ones with the problem, not you.

Reminds me of my aunt who lost her „shirt“ when she noticed that her daughter wasn’t on WhatsApp since like 3 hours ago. She texted everyone if they heard something from her.

At the end of the day she was writing an exam at school during that time. People are crazy

I'm not understanding why you won't use DND. I have DND scheduled every night. All of my family and close friends know that if they absolutely need me, they can call me twice and get through.

Why not just text everyone, "OK everyone, gonna get some sleep will respond in the morning" and then turn on DND? That should keep everyone at peace while you rest.

Most everyone I know uses this. I have a large family (parents had lots of siblings) and we're all in a massive WhatsApp thread - people are always talking there.

1. I mute Group threads.
2. I have DND scheduled.
3. I've let everyone know if they really need me, call me or iMessage me.

Haven't had problems for the many many years we've had group threads as a family (since the Google Talk days).

The OP makes a good point. Apple has done a poor job of implementing functionality for people with attention-deficit and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

/\ OP just do this - then you let them know you are ok at a time convenient for <you>, you need to let go of the requirement to always let them know you are ok at a convenient time for <them>.

It is Sunday, he is sleeping in.

This was the funniest thing.

Yeah, I slept in and they just left my phone on as normal and they didn’t call nor text. I’ve learned from this thread to mute the convo for my own sake, and communicate with everyone that we can all have DND turned on but if any of us ever need to get through to simply call a 2nd time.
