it's incredibly annoying because the airpods sound AWFUL when they're also the active input option.

Like clockwork, whenever my airpod maxes connect to my mac, my mac switches the preferred input to them no matter what.

Is there a way to stop it or even just disable the microphone feature of the airpod maxes altogether?

Not sure why that would be affecting your AirPods audio quality. Mine do the same thing (default as the input source), but the sound quality isn't affected. Could you give more details about exactly what you're hearing that's bad?

Something strange is happening on OP's computer. If the OS thinks the user is using the mic, it'll use the SCO codec, which is low latency but low quality.

Perhaps try unpairing the headphones from the computer and pair again.
