I'm trying to figure out why.

I understand that it does this if you add artwork, etc. These files never change. It's like it's updating these 40 or so particular songs on my iPad every time it syncs.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem :-(.

I have this happen with songs that are from one of those "digital album" things.

My iPod nano does the same thing, I don't know why and the cause of it.

Is it the exact same 40 songs each time? My first thought is that it's updating the play count for whatever songs you listened to since the last sync. Maybe you happen to listen to an average of 40 songs between syncs. But you're not likely listening to the same 40 songs, unless you've got a couple new albums that are constantly on repeat! :p
