Everyone have choppy graphics on 17" MBP or is it just me?

I have done a lot of searching and reading about various graphics problems people are experiencing with their 17" MBPs, and it seems mine just started with the choppiness in the last few days.

Expose, Dashboard, games, all run horribly and stutter and chop constantly. It's maddening how a brand new machine with 256 MB of VRAM runs far worse than a Rev. A Powerbook from 2003 with 64 MB of VRAM.

Can anybody suggest a fix or something they did that alleviate the problem? Or is this simply a driver/software problem and we are stuck hoping that Apple addresses it with 10.4.11?

I have a MBP17 and the graphics are perfect. No choppiness at all doing the things you mentioned or even playing games on it.

FWIW, my 2.16 MacBook is very smooth with dashboard and expose. I would be concerned if a MacBook Pro w/256 video memory is choppy.

I'm thinking about reinstalling from scratch. The one thing that concerns me is that I transfered all my files (not applications) and, somewhat inadvertently, settings from my old Powerbook. I just have a feeling like this could be causing some sort of conflict or corruption somewhere.

Is is a new one? If so, it's probably the crappy 8600M drivers. I have both a new 15" MBP and a new 24" iMac. Expose, Dashboard, etc. are much smoother on the iMac despite it having quite a few more pixels.

Yes it is a new one, and I thought that was the case as well, especially after reading and searching.

I just wiped everything out and reinstalled updates 1 by 1, saving the update to 10.4.10 (another suspected culprit) till last. Everything was smooth before and still is after the update to 10.4.10. The problem seems to be solved or greatly alleviated. I guess it was something about the transfer from my old mac like I suspected!

no issues here....doesn't sound like something that is within normal operation...
