Everything gone after update OS

Hi, I'm a total noob with mac os but I desperately need help with this.

I have lost everything (pictures, documents, EVERYTHING) after updating the os for my mac.

Please can anyone help me with this?

What kind of Apple? What version of Apple OSX did you upgrade from and to? Where/how did you apply the upgrade?

Have you heard about Time Machine?
