Okay, so every now and then I get a hankering to upgrade my iPad Pro 2017 model. Here is how I fight that urge. What I do is simply
put it away and take out my iPad 4 (the older one- running iOS10). Now, don't get me wrong, it is still a decent iPad. It just doesn't do everything I wish it would. So, I run it for a few days and ::WHAM!:: I am right back to appreciate my iPad Pro again without the need to lust after a newer, shinier model. This little life hack works for me and I hope by sharing it with you, may success be yours in your quest to be satisfied and happy.

That’s genius! I should do that! ?

What often snaps me out of wanting a new IPP is putting a similarly spec‘d current generation one into cart along with a keyboard folio and pencil. The combined cost of replacement along with consideration of resale value for my old unit and lack of significant workflow improvements is enough to keep me from advancing to checkout screens.

Ok...so let me ask you this: how much did the iPad 4 cost you? And, how much did the 10.5” cost you? Added together, much is it costing you to “fight the urge” (setting aside the cumulative time of ownership and use)? Is that cost lower than what a new iPad that you may wish to buy (“hankering” was the word you used) cost you?

This is a little off topic, but similar. I used to follow a jewelry forum. It was recommended to women who started feeling like their diamonds were too small put the ring away for a few days then put it back on and their diamond would appear larger again. Kind of the same thing you’re doing here.

Same except I don't even need to add accessories. The configuration I want costs $1,964.25 after CA sales tax, recycling fee and AC+. ?

To me, it's too much for a minor refresh of the 2018 iPad Pro (1TB model has 6GB RAM same as 2020).

This IMO is a quality thread. It's very easy, especially hanging out in forums like this one, to get caught up in new gadget hype. I just detoured through crazytown myself choosing between the 11" iPad Pro and iPad Air 4 -- it was amazing how unhealthily obsessed over minute details I became for a period of time. And we've certainly done the same sort of thing with new versions of our existing gadgets, even when the existing gadgets serve precisely the same purpose in our lives that the new ones would (and often pretty well). I'm all for strategies that help remind us that what we have may be enough for our needs. Thanks, OP.

Can you please guide me how to prevent myself from upgrading my old 2010 dying MBP to the new M1 Macs...? ?
