Hi there,

hopefully you could help me - I'm working a lot with After Effects CS5 and Premiere CS5 and I hate this because of the ATI HD 5870 in my MacPro. So I plan to upgrade and need to know, if my configuration will work.

My System:

MacPro 5,1
2 x2.4 Ghz Quad-Core Xeon
12 GB DDR3
New Cinema Display

I want to buy an EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD http://tinyurl.com/6eupzgz

So I have four questions:

1) Will it work under Lion as second Card only for rendering stuff?
2) Will it fully work under Windows 7 in Bootcamp?
3) What kind of Display-Adapter is necessary to connect it to my Cinema Display?
4) What kind of Drivers are necessary under Lion?

Pleaser help guys :)

thx!

Hi

I don't think your Mac has enough power sockets to run both cards. If you do get enough power into it though:

1) Will it work under Lion as second Card only for rendering stuff?

Don't know, but probably not I'm guessing as I don't think Lion supports this GPU. Apple definitely don't officially support it anyway.

2) Will it fully work under Windows 7 in Bootcamp?

Yes, again provided that you can get enough power into it.

3) What kind of Display-Adapter is necessary to connect it to my Cinema Display?

It should have a DVI-D and MDP port on it so connection options should be quite good.

4) What kind of Drivers are necessary under Lion?

Again, I don't think Lion supports it so you may struggle. Even if you can get it running using exotic drivers, you're on shaky ground when it comes to OS updates as people using hacks to get unsupported cards have found out to their cost in the past.

Netkas.org has the answers

1. Ma Pro has 2 power ports, as the other poster pointed out, you need four to run these 2 cards. Don't even THINK of splitting power to run these 2 cards unless you have a close family member who works at an Apple store.

2. Yes

3. You may find that ATY_Init will enable the DIsplayport, in which case you need a $15 adapter. If Displayport NOT enabled, you will need a $200 Atloona adapter.

4. Drivers are in Lion. The GTX570 and GTX580 can be run, but you need to add their device id's to existing driver. This has been written about 20 times, not sure why everyone thinks they need a new thread to ask the same question. New thread won't get you a new answer, just the same ones everyone else has gotten.

Go to Netkas.org if you want facts, here you will get opinions for the most part. I was the very first person to run a GTX570 in a Mac, I am not offering opinion. Mine does not have DP, hence no answer for that part.

I'm not sure GPUs are used for final rendering...

For real time rendering, it's usually a good idea to have the card doing the rendering hooked to the monitor you're watching the preview on. Otherwise it has to transfer the rendering between cards, which is expensive.

What's your issue with the 5870? Aside from the lack of CUDA, it's a pretty darn good card.
