Hi,

I recently installed a GTX680 graphics card in my Mac Pro. It is the eVGA GeForce GTX 680 Superclocked, 02G-P4-2682-KR.

Of course in the Mac Pro it is positioned in slot 1 or 2, and hence the fan is "pointing" upwards. After a few days of using the card, which works wonderfully in OSX and in Windows 7, I started hearing a fan noise. So I took out the card, checked for dust etc., and found that the fan on the eVGA card can "move" up and down, just a few millimeters. Unfortunately enough to give off a sound when spinning around in "sunken" position. If I then "pull out" the fan, to its out-most position, it is completely noiseless.

I don't want to open up the graphics enclosure (I'm sure that'll void warranty), but before I complain to the vendor, is anyone in a position to verify my findings, or is it only my card?

I "pulled out" the fan two days ago, and have had no noise since then, so perhaps it was a fluke.

I opened up my old Powerbook a while ago, one of the fans made and still makes a sound, needs replacment, this aside I checked both fans and they both move up and down, I think it's normal for them to do so.

Fans will "float" a little on their bearings and the card will certainly work in the horizontal position.

Is it fouling slightly on any cables that you can see?

If not, put the seller on notice that you may have an issue and are keeping the card under observation. For the money you paid, you deserve one which works properly.

I checked it out again, and it doesn't look like the fan is touching anything in neither the "up" nor the "down" position. However, when depressed (down), there the fan definitely touches something, that is obvious from the sound. When "pulled out" (up) it is all fine.

I guess I will make a note with the vendor, just wonder if this is normal behavior in this particular eVGA card. It is one of the few that will work fine in the Mac Pro, and which I can actually get here in Greenland.
