Exc_bad_access & Kern_protection_failure

first time poster...

today I had a printer hang up, and aborted a couple of print jobs....

then,

I installed palm desktop and updated a handheld pda w/software...

then, attempted to install a piece of software (suze orman will & trust kit)

I cannot get beyond clicking on the installer icon for this program, the splash screen comes up, then the error screen comes up describing the failure?

powerbook 15" G4 1.67 OS 10.4.3

(BTW this software installs just fine on a sister 17" powerbook G4 1.67 OS 10.4.3?)

other than trying different software to accomplish the same task, are there any ways to repair what's going on?

I did read somewhere in the knowledge base that one should "repair permissions" each time one installs software that uses an installer program?

how does one repair the EXC_BAD_ACCESS & KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE in the apple world?

I have only been a mac user for about 6 months, although this type of problem is something that is common on the WIN side of the world, I hope it's not, FORMAT & re-install.....

From the looks of it the installer (or whatever it is you are trying to run) is either reading from or writing to some memory it does not own. It appears to be trying to do something CoreAudio related.

Do you have any non-standard Audio Units installed? Any other software differences between this machine and the one that works?

other than the palm desktop (which I un-installed manually) the machines are indentical (17" v. 15" both G4 1.67's 10.4.3), which is why I'm pulling hair out here.....

what might be the fix?

It's thread 0 that crashes.

These are the Macromedia Shockwave libs in /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10/Shockwave.bundle. Maybe there's something wrong with them. It sounds a bit far fetched, though, but it's either them or something that calls functions in these libs that cause the crash.

Either that, or there are some other libs with the same names.
