I realize this is a stupid question, but apparently I don't think it's stupid enough to stop me from asking...

I accidentally broke the volume/ring switch off my white 3GS today, so I made an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow to get it fixed. I was thinking while I'm there that I'd kind of like to switch from the white to the black, if possible. However, if they're just going to say no, I'd rather not even breach the subject. So is it possible for me to request a color exchange? Is there a fee for it if I do? Has anyone ever done this before?

Thanks so much in advance.

Doesn't hurt to ask.

If they say no, they say no.

However, if they decide to repair your iPhone instead of replace it, then you're obviously stuck with the same color.

If you hadn't said anything about the broken ringer, then you have 30 days (at least where I am, based on the law) to return/exchange the iphone without any penalties.

Since you broke it, it is no longer in new/sellable condition. You will most likely have to pay to fix it (with little chance of an exchange). Good luck...

They are going to replace the phone... But unfortunatly they will not let you change colors.. Their going to say sum like the black version is a total different model number and that they cant do it... They can only exchange your device for the same exact device....

They'll probably say no. I wouldn't even bring it up - no matter how you bring up the subject it'll come across like you're trying to take advantage of the situation - which, in a way, you are.

How exactly does it hurt to ask?

If they say 'yes', then great, if not, no big deal.

As I've experienced at the Genius Bar before, sometimes Apple policy doesn't matter. All that matters is that you get the right "genius" that is willing to do you a favor.

If you don't care how people look at you then I guess it doesn't. I just think you might look like a bit of a dink...

I don't see how?

"Hey, since you're giving me a new iPhone, any chance I could get the black one instead?"

"No, sorry, we can't do that."

"Oh okay. I guess it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks anyway."

"No worries. Here, take this free iMac instead."

But seriously, it's the Apple Store, not the Soup Nazi's line.

i didn't read any other replies so..... but if its under 30 days you can exchange it for a different color...

It doesn't "hurt" to ask- but there's zero chance they'll do it. Well, I shouldn't say "zero" because I suppose if they're out of stock of the color they're replacing they may change it. But that really would have nothing to do with
your request.

I understand that they've been able to alter policy in store at times, and I've been on the receiving end of this policy before, but unfortunately this isn't one of those situations. This is one of those things apple has clearly taken a stance on. I think it's understandable on their part, but like the OP, I politely asked (couple times actually at a couple different stores) and their policy was made perfectly clear.

Well, since it's happened to you a couple of times, there's absolutely no possible way that anyone else could have a different experience.

Umm, as I said, because at a couple different places, a couple different times- they made their policy on this VERY CLEAR. Not only was it clear, but it was consistent. They won't do it. This is pretty simple really. I'm sure if the OP provides us with an update his outcome will be the same.

Here's a nicely timed coincidence:

Well, since you seem to only explain things in absolutes based only on what you experience, please explain to me how a friend of mine exchanged her white 3GS for a black 3GS at the Century City Apple Store this past Friday......

She was having a battery issue and the genius was going to replace it for her. She decided to ask if they wouldn't mind making the switch for her (she's always had white even with her 3G, and decided to make a change), and they said sure. They didn't even laugh at her or anything:rolleyes:

Presto chango.
