I was one of the unlucky ones with poor battery life on my iPhone. An overnight charge would last 4.5 to 5 hours with wifi turned off. I bought it on the launch date so I'm out of the "two week grace period." I called 1800myapple and they set up an appointment at the Michigan Ave Apple Store near where I live. The Genius at the iPod bar aked me what was wrong with my iPhone. I told him about my battery problem and he said rather emphatically, "are you having any other problems with the iPhone?" I told him the speaker phone was nearly inaudible. He said "those are the magic words, if it was just the battery we would have had to send it in and you would have to pay for a rental. With speaker problems we can exchange it right away."
He called a number using my iPhone, listened to the speaker phone and said, "sounds bad, good enough for me." He then said that the loud Apple store environment was perfect for testing the speaker phone. 3 minutes later his paperwork was completed, he switched the sim into a new iPhone and sent me on my way. Synching at home was a snap - iTunes reset my new iPhone automatically and filled it with the exact same data and preferences as my last iPhone - a flawless transition. Thanks Apple!
