I was one of the unlucky ones with poor battery life on my iPhone. An overnight charge would last 4.5 to 5 hours with wifi turned off. I bought it on the launch date so I'm out of the "two week grace period." I called 1800myapple and they set up an appointment at the Michigan Ave Apple Store near where I live. The Genius at the iPod bar aked me what was wrong with my iPhone. I told him about my battery problem and he said rather emphatically, "are you having any other problems with the iPhone?" I told him the speaker phone was nearly inaudible. He said "those are the magic words, if it was just the battery we would have had to send it in and you would have to pay for a rental. With speaker problems we can exchange it right away."

He called a number using my iPhone, listened to the speaker phone and said, "sounds bad, good enough for me." He then said that the loud Apple store environment was perfect for testing the speaker phone. 3 minutes later his paperwork was completed, he switched the sim into a new iPhone and sent me on my way. Synching at home was a snap - iTunes reset my new iPhone automatically and filled it with the exact same data and preferences as my last iPhone - a flawless transition. Thanks Apple!

The call volume on my original phone was great but the speakerphone was awful. The call volume on my new phone is also very good, can hear clearly while driving with the windows down. The speakerphone is much better than the original phone - loud and clear.

One thing I have noticed though on iPhone to iPhone speakerphone calls is that there is an echo when either one or both parties are using the speakerphone. Same thing with using the headphone microphone. On my end everything sounded clear but the person I was calling heard an echo - the echo stopped when I unplugged the headphones/mic and used the regular phone mic. This just came up last night - I'm going to have to poke around the web to see if this is a common issue.

That's strange...I kinda thought ALL iPhones had weak speakers. Like this is just inherent in the design.

It was but a iPhone tester reported it to Apple and they fixed it.

What are you saying? That one of the iPhone testers found this issue and Apple fixed it, but not before hundreds of thousands of defective iPhones were already made?

Im saying mistakes happen, this is the first phone Apple made, there will be a few faults.

Understood...I just question whether they will replace the speaker with a better one. I've gone through 3 iPhones now for various issues and all have had crappy speaker volume. If anyone can verify that they actually are swapping speakers for ones that are louder, I'd definitely like to know that.

Thopught you might be interested. I called Apple and complained about the speaker volume. The nice lady said they had received a lot of complaints and to return the phone to my AT&T store (no Apple store in my area) for an exchange.

AT&T of course sadi no dice. I called Apple again and this guy said the first gal was wrong and I had to send it in. I told them I could not be without a phone. They said for $30 they would loan me one. That seemd a bit unfair but what the heck. Got it alls et up. After I hung up I realized they never asked for payment. So I called back and the third guy said, no problem, they would waive the $29.

This will be fun to watch.
