I've spent more than 10 hours waiting at Genius bar, calling Apple care trying to figure out why my MBP kernel panic from ext HD. I live in Canada, so the closest Apple store is 2 hrs drive per way for me.
Yesterday, the Genius tried several ways to boot from ext HD, changing RAM but still doesn't work. He said he's gonna order Logicboard and test that.
After driving, waiting for more than 10 hrs, I called Apple care to request replacement instead of repair. The product specialist was actually very considerate and put in a request for an exchange. He said someone with contact me to process the exchange.
My question:
1. Can I request a different screen? Glossy instead of matte?
2. I live in Canada, and I believe the specialist i talked to thought that I live in US. Can the exchange still be done? (Canada Apple do not exchange, they only repair - please correct if I'm wrong). If Canada only do repair, I rather give a US address and pick up the replacement. Better yet, can I have it send to an Apple store and open it there on the spot to see if there're dead pixel, and test for booting from ext HD?
3. Will replacement be new or refurbish? How can I tell?
4. Will I have to send in my current MBP first before then send the replacement over?
5. If I can send in my existing (Defective) MBP after I receive the new one, can I still keep the old one instead if there are dead pixel or yellow banding on the replacement's LED?
6. How about the mail-in-rebate? I've already sent them in. Will replacement MBP void the rebate?
7. For those who have done this, how does the exchange process work?
