Expected 'Mac Pro' build quality?

Hey all,

I wanted to discuss the idea that the expected build quality of the Intel PowerMac may not be as high as the current G5 PowerMac. There seem to be a lot of unhappy MBP owners out there - Core Duo Mini owners seem happy (apart from the ***** graphics!)

There doesn't seem to be a great deal of interest in my dual G5 PM with 20 months AppleCare left on it:

I'm personally very keen on selling my iMac G5 and getting a PowerMac. I've decided to wait until details of the Intel PowerMacs are officially announced before deciding between a 'known' G5 and an 'unknown' Rev.A Intel. I'm hoping Apple redesigns the case, so that more internal hard drives can be installed, like the G4 Towers.

Others could be doing the same...

Actually, the mini has had a LOT of problems with both airport and bluetooth. And I've seen few if any mini users who have complained about the graphics, they're perfectly fine for just about everything but high end gaming. Most of those complaints are coming from people who've never touched the box and are complaining based on specs.

I don't know if I'd say the issue is build quality. There are just a lot of changes in the hardware since the last generation of each box. The desktop machines seem to have less problems than the laptops, and the newer models seem to have less problems than the ones released earlier.

There's always the possibility of problems with ANY model, and ANY revision. The towers might be fine off the bat, they might have issues. And if they're fine initially, later revs might have problems. The safe way to go is to wait until they're shipping and see what people report.

If you're that concerned, just wait a couple months. I had a MacBook Pro that was experiencing the whining issues and partially some heat issues, and I sent it in because of a small dent that was on the case when it shipped.

Shipping was quick and I got to keep my old computer to transfer all the files off of it. And this new computer I got about a month after they started to ship has none of the problems my old one did.

Honestly, the whole thing was not a big deal... Migration Assistant transferred everything seamlessly overnight and it was like I had the same computer, only without any problems.

I expected there to be a few kinks to work out in the new systems but they worked everything out pretty fast considering the one I have now has no problems. So yes, I had a "beta computer" but Apple was responsible and replaced it... so it's more like I got a prototype while they were working on the final model and then when they were finished I got to trade it in for a new one, almost a "feature, not a bug" kind of experience for me.

So if you want one when it comes out with the small yet possible chance of problems but the eventual acknowledge and repair of the problems, then buy as soon as it's released. If you don't want to deal with repairs and are less adventurous, wait a couple months. This is pretty good advice with any electronic device these days.

Don't you think that PowerMac successor build quality is somewhat less likely to be an issue, of all the Macs? I mean, the thing is a bunch of bolted together parts in a ginormous tower case. Compared to *every* other Mac model, this thing has got to be much, much, much easier to build. I guess it's possible that there could be problems, but....

I agree. I remember far fewer problems with early G5s, my dad bought a few for his business and none of them had any major problems.
