So…
I didn’t it.
I should have waited but…
I got Apple Silicon Envy!

I have ordered a MacBoon Pro w 16g and an Apple Silicon. I’ve also gotten Final Cut, Motion, and Logic… yes. I may put my Adobe Premiere days and/or Adobe After Effect days behind me. Not sure it’s a good idea… but all the phenomenal stability Apple is having with their apps is calling me to a better place.

Because I have serious FOMO and like to torture myself… I want to learn any tips and tricks you have with the M1. Anything I Should know about? How does it “Really” perform? How does photoshop work? Does After Effects play nice? Is it really 4 streams of 4K in real-time? Is that just Final Cut? Is browsing faster? Is Developing faster… Does HomeBrew behave nicely? Do databases…

Lets create a evolving guide for creatives moving to M1. Wether your an App Developer or Creative Media Specialist… that’s an actual Apple Job title… Producer, Editor, Designer, Developer, Artist, Composer…

What works for you? And what don’t.

My device hasn’t shipped yet… but I’m using this post as my countdown to heaven. Well Atleast away from outmoded hell.

Does the M1 crash? Any spectacular errors? Any mishaps… I want to know it all!

Does HomeBrew behave nicely?
Don’t know about most of your questions but I can say that homebrew has been stable since they released the M1 compatibility.

Is Developing faster…
Faster than what? My compile times are slightly faster on my M1 MBA than on my 6 core 2013 Mac Pro but if I worked on something that needs more than 16 GB I’m pretty sure the 64 GB in the Mac Pro would win out overall.

More Ram is always preferable, of course with m1 we are currently limited.

You are in for a major treat. The M1 machines are not just a bunch of hype--I'm nothing but amazed so far.

I only have one tip for you. This is going to sound like me making a joke, but I'm serious: take a look at your battery before you shut it down/put it to sleep after using it. Mine needs to be charged so seldom, that sometimes I forget to even look at how much juice I have, and then the next day I take it somewhere and realize I don't have much time left.

Granted, even if you're only at 20%, you still probably have 3 or 4 hours of good usage left before you need an outlet.

Congrats. You are going to enjoy the system.

I also left Adobe Premier Pro. I went to DaVinci Resolve Studio. I have also dropped After Effects. Still prefer Audition for audio, but may also drop that in time.

I do ML and AI and find the Air is OK for that. Still, I often ship to the cloud for model training since it is hard to beat the resources available on a server farm.

I’m planning on starting to move to FCP - but I have tired Divinci once… it reminded me of Sony Vegas or some amateur software… so I quickly moved away. Maybe it’s worth another look.

Do use the paid or free version? Also how does one get the paid version?

I started with the free and recently upgraded to the paid "Studio" version. The free did about 80% of what I needed, but the paid version, Studio, has some nice additional features and tools. The UI is largely the same in both, just a few more options in Studio.

You can download the software from https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio. But to use it you need a license key. In a throwback to the 90s, you actually have to buy the paid edition from a reseller and they send you a license key on a card or USB stick. The license key lets you install it on 2 of your systems at a time. The USB stick is for people working someplace where they have many systems and lets you move from machine to machine.

I believe most resellers still have the deal where if you buy the Studio version you get a free Speed Editor keypad that has a jog wheel and dedicated editing function keys. I have mine but have not connected it yet.

Let me qualify all of this with the fact I am pretty new to video editing, less than a year ago. I have for years had a CC subscription for photo and audio work, so starting in Premiere Pro was free. But after using it for a while, I prefer Resolve.

I don't have a Speed Editor keypad, but I do have a Stream Deck - I wonder if that could be used in a similar manner to the Speed Editor?

Oh I'm a hardcore pro: Avid, Premiere Pro, now FCPX... I push my systems and software to the limit all the time. Fro 3 factors: 1) drop dead last minute deadlines, 2) staying creative, 3) working with thousands of clips from all over the network and hard drives from a variety of formats... - Big promos/and 4k footage now adding to my workflow. We're slowly adopting log... very very slowly... :D

I love log. Coming from high end photography Log makes a lot of sense to me and I was surprised it was not used in all video. I guess that is why I like node based grading in Resolve.

It arrived and powered on before I could hit the button… it’s already being awesome.

I discovered Rossetta doesn’t come by default - it has to be downloaded from the OS. I suspect that Rosetta may not always be available.

I believe it only does that once and then you never have to hear about it after that. Not sure if it's once per app that needs it or just once total--It's been so long since it's come up for me I can't even remember.

I choose to set it up from scratch - still took forever to install all my apps and such. Wish XCode came by default but it has been awesome so far.

I understand what you mean. My tip would be making a Time Machine after installing everything and setting it up how you like, that’s what I do

I have been using the Air for a couple days now and I do a mix of Developer / System admin work and the base model has been more than enough, never seen RAM at more than 75% for most of my heavy use cases.

Since it is on the new architecture, the back up should be good.

No, it’s absolutely not! More RAM is only useful in a few edge cases and needed even rarer. Faster single core performance and higher energy efficiency is ALWAYS preferable.
Key word: After Effects.

but yes all the cores.

Just an Update. I’ve worked with my new M1 for a week. 4 days same charge! It’s lightning fast and life changing speed. Getting use to the resolution and it being faster than me. ?

I did have a backlight problem, so they are replacing the display for me. Thank you Apple and I’m excited to see what they can do in the future!

M2… M3… M4…

Davinci is pretty solid these days, and in many areas (e.g. color, audio) seems more capable than FCPX. It's certainly not in the amateur software category. Definitely worth a look at the free version, which is already optimised for Apple Silicon.

Its just "wanting" to be used before you do. :) Rosetta 2 would be giving developers enough time (i think 3 years, should be plenty.)
