Expected release of MacBook Pro 14" with M2 Pro processor

I am planning to upgrade from my personal MacBook Pro 2011 to MBP 14" model. As a developer, I am not interested in MBP 13 or MBA. So,

1) When can we expect MacBook Pro 14" with M2 Pro processor? Can we get this year itself?

2) Will it use 5nm as M2 or advanced 3nm process?

As I use MBP for long duration, I want to buy the latest for future proofing. M1 Pro is really good but if we can get M2 Pro in ~ 6 to 9 Months, I can wait for it as I also have a personal Mac Mini 2014 and company provided 2018 MBP 15". 3nm process seems to be giving ~15% performance improvement, which will be good for long run and worth the wait.

2) Yes will probably use 5nm exact same as M2
3) Future proofing is a myth. When the M3 appears, what you gonna do, change your M2? Just buy what meets your needs now, and when your needs change, upgrade then and not before.

Considering your current experience is based around a 2011 Macbook Pro, even an M1 MacBook Air is going to seem like a rocket ship to you.

Yes true @MajorFubar. But Future proofing works out sometimes. I waited and bought IPad Pro M1 instead of IPad Pro A12Z, which is paying off with latest M1 exclusive features now. Same with iPhone SE1 (A9 processor) instead of iPhone 6 (A8) for the same price long time back.

Since M1 is a 1st gen chip, I am worried about the support it will get given how fast Apple is dropping/trimming down the support of old devices now (IPP A12Z is not even 2 years old and runs same ARM processor, lacks headline feature and not even having a proper external screen support). I can not wait for M3 but for M2 pro if it comes in ~6 to 9 months. Also I don't think M3 Pro gets more improvement over M2 Pro if M2 pro uses 3N processor node.

M1 support will be years and years I reckon. It's the Intel support which will die fast.
I can't think of a time when Apple were not supporting a product for a minimum of four years since it was last sold new.
So 2026 at the absolute minimum before we see an OS incompatible with M1 Macs, bearing in mind that although the M1 Air is a two year old product, the M1 Ultra was only launched in March.

Granted there will come a time when threads appear on here complaining how come the new MacOS Bognor Regis* isn't compatible with my fully-ripped $8K Studio Ultra cos it's still more powerful than a new M4 Air. But that's just the way it works.

*Funny how it doesn't work nearly as well when you use UK place names.

1. It's either in October 2022 or March 2023. Those are the usual months for Mac releases. My bet is on October.
2. Likely it will.

Always ask yourself if you can wait until March. If you can, then you have your answer on which machine to choose.

Promotions or discounts are routine and based on resellers internal handling. As per an MBA, ask yourself, do you need sustained performance?

The MBP 14" was $250 off 3 months ago when I got it on sale. Recent sales have been slightly worse than earlier this year so not related to impending release of new M2 Pro models.

MBP M2 Pro will come next year guaranteed! Apple's having issues with fulfilling orders with M1 itself and products are delayed for months now so M2 Pro will not happen this year also keeping in mind. Apple did the same thing with their M1s.

Reposting my post from another thread with some additions:

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, who is very reliable, says that we won’t get updated 14/16” MBPs this year. Since 2015, MacBook Pros have been released in May at the earliest point in the year and as late as November. Knowing Apple’s typical release schedule now, if Gurman is correct, the earliest a new model will be released is next year’s WWDC in June or at an October event, and that doesn’t mean that they will even ship right away. That means you likely will be waiting another year to year and a half for a new release. Apple did a 19- to 20-month release schedule from the first M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and 19-20 months from the 2021 MacBook Pro release is May-June 2023 (again, a year away at the earliest - likely WWDC).

Furthermore, Apple is having pretty significant difficulty just getting the current 2021 models delivered to customers, with deliveries being 1-2 months out if ordered from Apple.com and physical stores and third-party resellers having sporadic, unreliable stock. The new 13” MacBook Pro is probably the least in-demand MacBook and the easiest to produce and still has delivery dates pushed out a couple weeks for any custom builds.

Agreed. M1 to M2 isn’t as a big generational leap as Intel to M1.

If your workload has cutting edge demands, the choice between M1 and M2 is irrelevant as you would upgrade every 2 years.

1. October 2022 at the earliest and March 2023 art the latest
2. No. Most likely still use the 5nm process, but the second generation one. If not, maybe 4nm.

Couple of reasons, one if we keep in mind the previous cycle. M1 Pro did not come the same year of M1. Secondly, Apple is still busy fulfilling orders of M1 Pro. At best you will M2 early next year but it is not going to happen this year guaranteed!

Its really annoying that road map is still not clear for the Macs even after migrating to own silicon. With Intel, we can understand the issue. Having a clear road map will help in buying decisions like iPhones upgrades.
