Experience with MBP Refurbs? Quality improved?

Anybody have any experience with MBP refurbs?

I am specifically interested in knowing whether Apple has been able to solve some of the issues that they had with the models they are (still now) shipping: heat, whine....

If so maybe it makes more sense to pick up a refurb as the problem will have been addressed rather than an new machine!

Otherwise, as I need a machine soon (prefeably a laptop), I may just pick up a cheap mini until all of the quality issues have been sorted out (rev B next year....). I could afford a MBP but not one with quality problems and I can't stand noisy machines.

Any advice?

Get the Mini for now. It seems like Apple is currently more interested in suing their customers rather than issuing the cheap fix for the problems.

Alternatively you can just go for it and then reapply the thermal paste yourself.

Thanks, unless I hear anything good about refurbs, I'll stick to the mini.

Yep, it's hot and it has "the whine."

Heat lessened a little after installing the firmware/10.4.6

Honestly the whine doesn't really bother me unless i hook up external speakers (not headphones, they work fine.)

As for the stringent refurbishment process, they seemed to have missed the extra half gig of ram in there, so they might not have paid all that much attention to problems. (though i'm not compaining about the extra ram...)

1.5G , that's a weird config, i'd sold the 512 on ebay and get a decent 1 gig for dual channel

typo. should've been .5, but it's actually 1 cause apple gave me extra ram for some reason.

I don't have experience with MBP refurbs, but have bought refurb Apple systems, and have never had problems with them. IMHO they're better because they've been through a good shakedown.

I'm going with a Mini for the same reasons. It'll be good for the time being, and once it's "retired" it'll make a nice little server.

Good new Mac makes good refurb Mac, I think, if I borrow a tag line from Toyota's car commercial. So far, it seems rev. A MBP has less than stellar workmanship/reliability records, by reading countless posts on heat/noise issues and some other problems. If the new MBP is not as good as it can be, I am doubtful of the quality for the refurbished one. I admit I am biased against a refurb unit as I only buy a new one.
