Any recent experiences with a custom Mac Pro builder like ibuildmacs? I was hoping Apple might reintroduce a mid-form factor desktop but I guess that's never going to happen. I can't afford a 2019 Mac Pro, don't really want the limitations of a Mac Mini, and no point getting a Macbook Pro just to have it sit in one spot 90% of the time (which is what my current one does). I have a pretty good 4K monitor and keyboard/mouse so an iMac isn't necessary.

My needs are modest: mostly photography based. Perhaps some video in the future but likely nothing too high end. Like the idea of expandability to accommodate some larger drives for storage, so iMac would not be my first choice... unless power users here think I should just go for a pricey iMac.

ibuildmacs is touting a Catalina compatible build. How many more Mac OS upgrades would likely be possible? I'd like to get 5 years life out of whatever I buy.

Catalina removed MP5,1 support already, Mojave is the last supported macOS version. It's possible to run Catalina with a MP5,1 with some work, but don't count on 10.16 running, Apple is enabling AVX support already and MP5,1 Xeons don't have it.

What is AVX support?
