Is it me or is anyone getting a whole load of junk email on their .mac account? I've noticed it over the last week or so and quite a lot of it seems to get through Mails junk filter (even though its been in training for months). I no longer use my .mac to sign up to forums and things so i don't see why there is a sudden increase.

Rules are working pretty well though. I capture most of it now and move it to the Trash right away.
Back to the original topic, I am quite happy with .Mac. That account is virtually void of unwanted junk mail.

for any email service, the amount of junkmail depends on how readily you'll give up your email address. i always check with certain services that require an account and an email address to make sure that A. they particulary state that they won't disclose your email to anyone and B. any optional letters they send me are unchecked. i've had a hard time trying to turn off some of those weekly news letters. simply clicking the "unsubscribe" link doesn't always work, so now i don't even apply for them in the first place. (Rollingstone darn you go away!) never enter any popup contest for an Xbox or big screen TV that asks for information like email. you're just asking for it then.
Also, posting your address anywhere on the web (guestbooks, forums, ...) is a surefire way to get Spam.
In the year that I've had it, I haven't had a single spam to my .mac address. That's my extremely personal address though and it isn't posted on the web anywhere--only about a dozen people have it.
For comparison, my ISP address is the one I use for all my business on the web (purchases, etc) and it gets about 1-2 spams a week. The address through my domain, which hardly anybody writes to but is published on the web, gets hundreds of spams a day. The moral is if you want less spam, don't make your address public...and don't use aol (long story but if you use aol you know what I mean).

now my worst sourse of spam is actually through the university mail. for some reason they let organizations mail out to everyone just because they can. though joining a sorority might be interesting, i don't think i can apply. DELETED! though those aren't really trying to get you to buy something, in the spring i guess it's tradition for businesses of alumni to offer special deals for the students. hmm, teeth whitening at 80% off. no, i don't really think i'm interested, but thanks for reminding me again. it's really frustraiting, because it's not like i had it coming from waving my email address around, they just did it.
In 20 months of using .mac I haven't gotten any unsolicited junk. I have given my email address out a lot to websites I trust, rarely to those I don't fully trust, and never to those I don't trust. I've also made sure never to post it online.
Duff-Man says....there are lots of postings on the .mac help forums about the dramatic increase in spam making it through the server filters. Few of the postings there get anything but a "generic" reply from .mac staff explaining how junk mail is generated and how they get your address. There has defintelt been problems with their server-side filtering...I went from 4 or 5 a day to over 50 on a couple days...then it went back down to about 15 or so lately. I have been very very careful with my .mac address but somehow those scumbags have gotten hold of it. If the situation does not improve by the time it is time to renew this fall, I will abandon the account.....oh yeah!
