I want to create a small app, almost-widget like, that when an mp3/AIFF file is dropped onto it, you press "GO" and it exports the audio backwards to a file.

I have no idea where to start since this is my first app. Should I be looking at CoreAudio, or QTKit to get 'er done?

Any pointers would be great.

For creating sound bytes of things I want backwards in a song. Like a backwards symbol crash or a guitar slide. I can make a sound-byte that I can then throw into GarageBand to give a song a cool effect.

garage band won't do this?

Sound recorder could handle this in windows 3.1. It would surprise me if garage band can't.

That's not any fun. The whole point is to write the app. First, find a need, then fill the need.

I haven't been able to verify this, but you should look into CoreAudio features.
