I've got a co-worker who's not too tech savvy, but he just got an iPhone. At the ATT store they set everything up for him as far as registration, but he's never plugged it into a computer to sync it up with iTunes or anything.

Since then (about 2 wks ago) he's put all of his calendar and contact info into the phone, and he's only got it there. He came to me in the past few days asking about what would happen if he lost his phone, his phone broke, or whatever else might happen.

What are his options at this point? My thought is that plugging it into iTunes is going to erase the data; is that wrong? Also, how do we get those calendars off of there to sync up with something else that can server as a redundancy?

Thanks for any info!

If he connects to a Mac, it will sync everything from the computer to the iPhone and vice-versa, on a PC that may be a little bit sketchy, but should work the same, since iTunes does they syncing.

Thanks for the response.

He's never even installed iTunes on any of his computers, so I'm concerned about what might happen. I guess, though, that we'd get some kind of warning before iTunes decided to wipe his iPhone.

This may ultimately belong in the MobileMe forum, but I wanted to keep up with this existing thread for the time being.

I figured that Mobile Me would be his best bet (I didn't know if he'd balk at the price tag, but he says $100 is worth it for the convenience). From here, though, can he get Mobile Me and have it sync up all of his pre-existing calendars?

To clarify, his calendars and contacts are ONLY on his iPhone, but he's concerned about losing all of them. He's never synced it up (probably only been plugged into a computer once), and if he loses this stuff on my account I'll feel pretty bad.

Does this make sense?

I am not sure how he can save what he has but I do a free and easy way to sync the calendar with Mail2Web. Its free and easy to do. If you google Mail2Web for iPhone you will find a blog that has the instructions. This way if he ever did lose the phone everything was backed up, plus he could enter things online and they would sync with the phone.
