Hi all,

Just got an ATV about a week ago and have had a great time with it so far. I had a blast hacking the iPhone 2G when it first came out and the ATV is my new project for the cold months!

I was at a local electronics retail store and saw a sweet deal on a BluRay/HD DVD read + DVD Write drive made by LG for $119. I was wondering if this could be mounted via USB to read the discs?? Has anybody tried with XBMC or NitoTV??? Or is there an issue with HDCP??

BluRay USB -> Apple TV -> HDMI out

MMMmmmm..

Thanks for the reply Caveman....

About an hour ago I just read your post on the BD rip / Hand Brake trials ... how has that come along??? Any further ideas??

I figure that the time it takes me from the start of the BD rip process to the end, I might as well borrow some .mkv's from friends and convert them for the ATV for iTunes. XBMC hates my 720p .mkv's and NitoTV still chopps them up for some reason (with perian installed as well). I don't know though, I like the idea of doing the ripping myself but it would become tedious after some time.

This reminds me of when I purchased my first 2xDVD+R single layer burner. When TempegInc was the software used to compile the DVD's. I'm cringing at the thought of those days! The tech is a little different though.

It's good to hear your thoughts and process as well as others!

The HB dev team is working things out. It still does a good job with video in H.264 and MPEG2, and audio in AC3. I just transcoded Transformers down to 720p/6kbps/AC3/AAC for the Apple TV.

XBMC on the ATV is not ready for prime-time, IYAM. Love the connectivity, but it has many issues, particularly 720p playback.
