I am really sick with not being able to open .exe files on a mac. I've seen all these emulators for example: VirtualPC, Guest PC and Qemu X but you have to pay for something with them. You have to buy Virtual PC and Guest PC, and for Qemu X you've got to buy the actual Windows os. I have tried file juicer but that didn't work for me. All I want is a program for Mac that lets you convert a .exe file to anything like: .dmg or .sit or .bin etc... Surely there must be one major hacker out there? Oh dear.

What apps are you trying to run. Emulating them is slow and expensive (as you've worked out) so the best option is to get Mac equivalents. If you list them here, we may be able to offer alternatives assuming they don't already have Mac versions.

Are you trying to run the .exe file, or simply compress it? I would've thought Disk Utility could create a disk image (.dmg) containing an .exe file.

If you're looking to run that .exe file on a Mac without a Windows emulator, you're out of luck

Okay, we have a Beginner's Guide here that you may find very useful. It even has a section on IM Clients.

Messenger 7.5 is Windows only. It won't run on the Mac. The best we have is Messenger 5 and it sucks balls.

Nearly all...

If they are self-extracting files, there are some apps that will decompress these without the need for Windows.

actually, they are executable files.....the same kind as those nastly worms/trogans/viruses that infect windblows systems

decompressing and opening/running an .exe file are 2 different actions btw

But it's what he wants to do, either some of the zips of flash files he gets he wants to play with and file juicer ain't cutting it.

Of course Stuffit should work if they are some of the common PC archives.

definitely find Mac equivalents of any Windows software you can't track down. if you absolutely can't, I believe there's a few open source x86 emulators you might want to try that would be free. I'm not sure what the names are, so if anyone else knows what I'm talking about I'd appreciate it.

you'd still have to buy whatever version of Windows you want to emulate, and at least 1 GB of RAM is helpful.

Dah they're Windows only execute files. Just find a Mac app that does the same thing. Avoid MS software all together. MS stuff is for Windows world of computing.

why avoid MicroSoft software? they make mac products. and Office is quite good at what it does imo. OpenOffice is just not there yet...

internet explorer should be stayed away from, and perhaps WMP, but WMP does work fine too in most cases.

I avoid all things MS, it's a personnal thing with me. I loathe MS, they are like the General Motors Corp. of computer software. They're big, they're not innovative, they produce less then desirable products and people still buy their junk. I am of the opinion that biggest is not best. I've used Mac IE and Outlook Express in the past but found other apps that were more to my liking. As for Office, I don't own it, I have no need for it. Being in the graphics arts field, anything MS (Word, Excel) that is sent to us we convert to text and insert into whatever app is called for to produce the end file. If I need to produce something I open an graphic program, AppleWorks, even SimpleText.

Although it would be nice to avoid all things MS - its still used by the majority of individuals on computers - Mac or PC. So you have to be able to share files (Office, etc.) and condemning something purely because its MS doesn't get you very far.

Given the recent news that MS is stopping support of IE for the Mac just makes it easier to be frustrated with them - but they're more like the annoying relative - no matter what you do you can't get rid of them and they'll always be part of your family.....

Barely, and that's just because they're using the same makefile to build all versions of executables. Have you ever tried to run them directly from the shell?

In any case, equivalent software is always a much better thing that trying to force feed the operating system something it doesn't want. Diesel in your gasoline engine? No problem. It might run funny, as long as it runs.
