My current setup is a Mac Pro 2006 which has the following drive setup.
Original Optiarc IDE DVD in lower optical bay
Patriot Inferno SSD (boot drive) in upper optical bay using ODD SATA port
1TB WD Black (home directory, user data files) HDD Tray 1
3 X 2TB WD Green (DVD images and MP4 videos) HDD Trays 2, 3, 4
Externally I use a 1TB external drive on USB for Time Machine as well as a USB dock for working with bare drives. I have on order an eSATA PCIe card so that I will transition both of these from USB to eSATA in the next week or so.
So I am basically full as far using available space inside the Mac Pro. Well I guess I could fit another SSD in the upper optical drive tray and use the other ODD SATA port.
So far my entire video collection has all been DVD but with the purchase of my new 50" Plasma 1080p and drops in Blu Ray prices I can see that the transition to Blu Ray is upon me. Currently I do all my DVD ripping with AnyDVD HD under Windows 7 under Parallels. I then use Handbrake (and my 8 cores
under OSX to make MP4's that I share to all the machines in the house.
So the question is (you knew I had to eventually get to a question, right? what external Blu Ray drive would you recommend? I expect to be continuing to use AnyDVD so I am hoping that any external USB drive will be picked up through Parallels. I suspect that USB is adequate and I don't need eSATA since I am using both eSATA ports for hard drives.
