Apple's drive has a nice enclosure, but is otherwise unremarkable, and almost triple the cost of most portable DVD drives.
It's also not officially supported on PCs, but will work on them if one extracts the driver from the Bootcamp installer package and manually installs that component, so that also makes it less flexible.
It also has a short, captive cable, which may be fine for use with a MacBook, but also limits placement in other contexts.
For most purposes, IMO, that doesn't make it a very compelling choice, compared to one of the readily available alternatives that are Mac compatible, and much cheaper.
Keep in mind that some portable USB drives, like the Asus models, require separate data and power connections and will take up two ports, while others, like the LG models do not.
I much prefer the old school, robust full-sized drives like the Pioneer/Lite-on/Yamaha burners, but they've retreated into a smaller niche, and not easy turnkey solutions.
