I've just bought a Philips digital dictaphone. When I connect it via USB, it does not mount to the desktop. When I look at USB connections through System Profiler, it registers as being connected. It doesn't appear in Disk Utility or anywhere else.

A friend of mine has the same model of dictaphone, same OS. His dictaphone mounts on his computer, my dictaphone mounts on his computer but neither mounts on mine.

This makes me think it's got something to do with the software on my machine.

Any ideas how to get the thing to mount?

Hi,
Do you mean what does it mount as on my friend's computer? It just shows up on the desktop as an external disk - a white-coloured icon.

Do you have the documentation for the device?

Are there setup options on it, insofar as how it "behaves", USB-wise?

I believe that with some (non-Apple) USB mp3 players, there is a setup option that determines how the device connects to the host computer. I think you want it to show as a "mass storage" device. If, when checking the setup prefs, you find such a choice, and if there is more than one option, try EACH of the options, and connect to the Mac each time to see if the results change.
