I've got a hodgepodge of macbook pros with thunderbolt 2 and soon will have another with thunderbolt 3.
I have no external displays for use at home and want to choose a 27" one that will work with both or at least with minimal adapters and accessories. It'll get used mostly for programming, I've used the apple 27" display for work in the past which works extremely well. I don't know that I care about 4K or 5K at all.

What have you used successfully for an external display with thunderbolt 2 and 3?
A bonus would be if there's connection for USB and power

Cheers!

Which MBPs do you own?

I have a mid-2015 15" MBP, which I plan to connect to an LG 27UD88-W. I can connect via Display Port, and have USB to USB C to allow the monitor act as a hub.

If I had access to USB C natively like in the new MBPs then a single connection would do the same.

You'll need to check if your older MBP can drive 4k.
