I'm sure the answer is somewhere in the search but I've spent hours browsing here and elsewhere and can't seem to figure this out.

I'm currently using a TB cable to use my 2013 iMac 21.5" as an external display with a 2014 MBA. I'm now wanting to buy an external display to use alongside my 2013 iMac 21.5".

What type of connection/monitor do I need to have to connect to my iMac? Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Use a Mini DVI port to HDMI adapter. It will plug into the other TB port. If you search for Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter on Amazon, a ton of these will show p in the $7–$10 range. Don’t worry that none of the adapters is likely to say Thunderbolt—these are what you want.

You want a backlit LCD display. Those without a backlight will not be as bright as your iMac. HDMI displays made in the last two years are now so energy efficient that they run cool to the touch.
