Just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion. I have all of my iTunes data stored on an external 4 bay drive, since the upgrade the drive is disconnecting randomly. The drive is plugged directly into the back of the iMac and I have tried changing the cable.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

I have attached the drive to my MacBook which I have yet to upgrade to ascertain if it is ML causing the disconnect. Could be a coincidence and the drive is broken.

This is the drive http://linitx.com/product/13015

Still going strong on Lion, no disconnects. That tells me there is an issue with Mountain Lion, is anyone else using external HD and having the same issues?

Further update to this problem, deselecting putting the hard drives to sleep in system preferences seems to have fixed the problem

I had the same problem when I upgraded to Lion. Glad you found it.

Not sure why Apple would change our system prefs on us during an upgrade...?

I have this problem, two separate drives plugged into mac mini one with movies one with tv shows.
Tv shows no problem but movies disconnects randomly.
Have had the sleep in system preferences unticked but still have the issue.

I have similar problem on my Imac. When I upgraded to ML just about all USB devices I have disconnect. I have 2 external drives, 1 500 GB I use for TM and the 1TB I use for storage. Also a logitech K750 keyboard with its own usb dongle. When my system goes to sleep everything disconnects except for my magic mouse. The only option is to restart the system then everything work fine on reboot. When going back to sleep same thing happens again. I have gone in sys pref and unchecked all 4 options in energy saver. Anyone else with this going on.

Fixed my problem by deleting the second partition on the movies disc

same disconnect problem here, after ML upgrade on MacBook Pro and iMac.. my temporary fix is to not let either computer sleep! I thought not letting HD sleep helped, but it only lasted a couple of days then the external USB drives were disconnected once again.
