I need an external harddrive. Thing is I can either get an external harddrive with both 'FIREWIRE400 and 16MB Cache', or an external with 'FIREWIRE800 and 8MB Cache'. Which one is gonna be faster? Thanks in advance.

If you're going to be transferring a large amount of data the Firewire 800 for sure.

Duff-Man says...FW800 for sure, provided that the computer you are using it on has FW800. Connected a FW800 drive to FW400 bus only gets you FW400 speeds of course....oh yeah!

FW800, IF and ONLY IF it's a 3.5" drive. Otherwise 16 meg cache if it's a 2.5". 2.5" drives are not going to be any faster on FW800.

I'd go for the lacie, but that's just me. I'd had my FW800 lacie drive for a few years and it runs very well. Never had any issues.

I have one of those lacie's somewhere.....they are a good unit, can make a bit of noise, but my only real complaint is that i only bought the 250gb i really needed a 500gb. But a solid purchase. I have 2X160gb D2's FW400 and the 250GB Extreme, all work sweet, though my 12" doesn't have FW800 so i don't know the difference when it comes to the speed.

Otherwise it comes with pretty much the works

The LaCie will almost always be faster on account of the FW800, and they're a solid company.

That said, we have one of those Maxtor 300GB drives at work and there's certainly nothing wrong with it, either--comes with all the cables, well built, and has run fine (though I've heard bad things about the button software, which I never installed). Speed-wise, it's hamstrung by the FW400, though. Really the only reason to get it would be extra space (since you can get the 300GB Maxtor for about the same $200 as the 250GB LaCie if you shop around just a bit).

You could just buy a drive and FW800 enclosure and mount the drive in it and save a few bucks....it's not rocket science. It's about as hard as changing a lightbulb...but I guess people just buy lights with light bulbs in them already *shrug*

it came with a FW800 cable, a 6pin to 6pin FW400 cable, a 4pin to 6pin FW400 cable, and a USB A to USB B cable.

The case is very rugged and sturdy. and I find it to be very quiet, only a slight hum. and FW800 on my powerbook =

Some external enclosures aren't properly cooled. I had one that would crash the HD after transferring data for more than 5 minutes because it would overheat the HD.

Update

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Went with the 250GB Tripple Interface Lacie from ZipZoomFly.com. Got it for about $190 with free 2-day shipping, and it really did come in 2 days-flat. I'm very happy with it. Looks cool, works very very fast with the Firewire 800, has all the cables, and great Software...infact It saved my butt cause I was able to install MacDrive (comes as trial version) onto girlfriends PC and then throw gigs and gigs of my data from an older Win formated external harddrive into this LaCie (which comes formated for Macs, by the way). Until I notiiced the included software, I was stumped. I very much recommend this harddrive.

Now may my harddrive have a long healthy lifespan.
