External drive permissions changing

Have a MacMini (version prior to new one) and an external Newertech MiniStack enclosure with 500gb drive attached via Firewire for backups.
Enclosure has 2 partitions (250gb each) - one for Time Machine and one for Carbon Copy Cloner (bootable image).

Periodically the external partitions flip to Read Only status so neither of the backups will run. This also happened in the past when the drive was a single, Time Machine partition.

DiskUtility shows no errors using Verify Disk - Verify Permissions is grayed out.

Anyone have any idea what is happening here?
