I know this post looks a bit 3 long but please bear with me. I wanted to give all the facts before i explained the problem i was happening so people would have a better idea and would be able to find a solution or maybe just an answer to why this is happening.

So i'm using a 2011 Macbook pro and was running High Sierra on it as that is the highest i could go OS wise. However one fine day when i was setting up at a gig (Im a DJ) my laptop decided to die on me. It would come to the apple logo loading screen, load a bit and then just shut off. When i would restart it it would do the same thing again. My dj partner who was there told me this was an issue with the OS and that he would fix it in a day or so and not to worry about it. So i gave it to him and when he got it back he said had used open core patcher and installed BIG SUR on my laptop. I wasn't too happy about that but it is what it is and i thought as long as everything works fine its okay for the time being till i get my new macbook pro. The fist time this solution worked for a few days until one day the laptop was working super slow and when i restarted it it would get to the loading screen and just get stuck there. Then we tried repeating the process but for some reason i couldn't format my internal 1TB SSD which i had been using and thus wasn't able to install the OS again. Luckily he had a spare 256 GB SSD which we then proceeded to use and install BIG SUR on again. Its been a few days now everything seems to be working fine. Only thing is i use my first usb slot on the laptop to plug in a HUB on which i have a bunch of different things running including 2TB external drive which shows up as an external drive when plugged into the hub. However i have another 4GB external which i use and i usually use the second USB hub on the laptop to plug that in. When i do that i noticed the icon was different than what an external drive usually looks like and it looked just like my internal drive which is running my OS. On closer inspection in disk utility i saw that the external 4TB was showing up as an internal drive for some reason. Furthermore there was NO option to eject it in the Sidebar menu but when i right clicked it there would be an option to eject drive and even disk utility i could do the same. When i plugged the same 4TB drive in my HUB and used it it showed up as an external and i tried the other 2TB external in my laptops second USB port and again this different external drive showed up as an internal drive. Same as before there was no eject option in the sidebar but when i right clicked on it on desktop it gave me the option to eject it. So by doing that i realized the issue was not with the hard drives but rather with that second usb slot. When i switched the slots up and plugged in my external drives into the first slot on my laptop both are showing up as externals and even when i plug them into the hub which is now plugged into the second USB slot (the one causing the issue) they still show up as externals. So i'm pretty confused as to why this is happening.

Now like i said in my opening statement...... i know this post is kinda long but i thought it would be best to give all the information before i presented the problem. So can anyone give me an explanation for why this happening and could it create a problem from me in the near future and also a solution as to how i can make it go back to how it was before. I know most people will say that as long as i can eject it its fine and i shouldn't bother with it but it is kinda irritating and i want to know whats causing this and how to potentially fix this! Any help would be appreciated! THANKS!

Does “showed up as external” mean the drive icon was the same as your boot drive?

you mean showed up as internal? if so yes....the icon looked the same as my boot drive plus in disk utility it shows up labelled as an internal drive. This happens to any external drive i plug directly into the second USB slot on my laptop. However like i said when i switched it around and plugged my externals directly into the first USB slot they show up normally as external drives with the icons to match. Now with the HUB plugged into the second slot when i plug in an external drive it also shows up correctly like an external drive, its only when i plug in any external drive directly into the second USB slot on the laptop is when they start getting picked up as internal drives with the icons matching that of my boot drive and even showing up as in internal drive in disk utility. Its just a really random and weird situation and i really want to know why this is happening in to begin with.
