External Drive Unmounting Itself

While this doenst happen at random ill explain how it does happen. I log in, i get lazy i dont feel like logging out so i just switch to the login window. Wife comes along logs in to her profile read thru her email etc etc etc, she logs out and it returns to the login window. Now i come back log back in to my profile and my external hard drive is now dismounted and i have to remount it or cycle the power on the drive to get it to show up again. I havent seen this problem until about 2 days ago, i checked the drive and all was fine, but i cant seem to figure out why when she logs in to her profile then logs out it seems to make the drive on my profile unmount, ive never seen it do that before. It used to be that it wouldnt matter and my profile would always have the drive mounted no matter if she logged in or not. I can go to a login screen and so long as she doesnt login to her profile i can go back and the drive is still there. I know my daughter likes to sit there and pound at keys, is there anything that would cause a drive to dismount for even me that maybe was accidentally pushed? Im trying to figure this out as i like staying logged in so mail still colects in my inbox and other things i run can still run in the background while my wife needs to use the mac, but its odd now that the moment she logs out i cant see the external drive on my profile, again if she doesnt login i can go tot he login screen all day long, log back in and the drive is still mounted, its seems to be only when she logs out which makes me think there is maybe a setting that im missing somewhere, or that maybea kid accidentally triggered?

Do you have any other firewire (or USB2, if that's what the drive is) devices plugged in? iPod, etc.

ipod is plugged in to the back of the firewire drive, its a mini so i only have 1 port The ipod is always detached though since it doesnt run unless im updating it. the drive works, it just seems that when my wife logs in then logs out it dismounts the drive for me also.. seems kinda odd. as i said before, if i just switch to the login screen and she doenst login the drive will still be there, im thinking its something in her profile or something accidentally pressed by small fingers, but id still like to get it back to when it didnt matter and the drive didnt dismount itself after she logged out.

There is no owner to the drive, and in disk utility it verifies fine, and there is no check permissions (its greyed out). in info the drive says "Permissions: off" that hasnt changed since i first installed the drive, it never happened on panther either. It seemed to just pop up about 2-3 days ago..

EDIT: when she logs in i can change to my profile and the drive is still there, its only when she logs out that it seems to take it away.

Try this, perhaps your wife’s profile has something running that causes the drive to dismount. Perhaps there is some sort of strange gremlin script running.

System Preferences-->Accounts -->Start Up Items

there was nothign in there cept a entourage thing and weatherpop.. i took them out just in case but it made no differnce. Its really odd to me that when she logs out it unmounts the drive from even my profile.. Yet i can go to the login screen over and over and its still mounted when i log back in.. I figure it has to be something in her profile?

any other suggestions would be apprciated.. is there a finder selection that "auto dismounts" when you log out? im just seeing if maybe a series of mistaken key strokes could have caused it.. i.e. kids banging on keyboard.. I can remount using disk utility or by cycling the power/unplug and replugging the device in, but before this started 2 or 3 days ago i never had to do this.. its a bit annoying and frustrating

Restart the computer if you haven’t.
If all else fails I would create a new profile and see if that doesn’t dismount the drive. I would then copy your wife's (making sure not to print wives's) libraries, bookmarks and preferences, etc. until it is a mirror of her profile. You might ask if she is willing to switch to the new profile if it doesn’t dismount the drive.

Is it just the act of loading her profile? Perhaps an application she is using. I don't know.

I can go in to her profile, load nothing and log out immediatly, and it still does it, im not too sure myself. since the machine had been on for over a week with no restarts that was the first thing i thought about and i restarted it, made no difference sadly. Maybe this is some tiger glitch that im fighting and i just dont realize it yet.. who knows.. Sometimes i wonder how much easier OS X really is, but needless to say i still love it..

I created a new account and it still does it with the new one i created. I see the drive what looks like it disconnects when i log out of that account. then when i return to my account *poof* its gone Is there a setting somewhere that im missing that tells OS X to unmount the volume when it logs off, and i would figure that it would only apply to that profile and not mine, though i know Finder is a shared resource.

Any help would be appreciated
