I copied some files to my Lacie 2TB external HD. The operation seemed to be successful, however the disk showed up with no files. I ejected the disk and reinstalled – the Lacie will not mount on the desktop. It shows in the Disk Utility as "AppleAPFSMedia then underneath Uninitialised. In the info shown below the Partition Map: not supported
SMART status: not supported
I have tried disk repair, it will not initiate, it will not mount. I have even tried to do the same in Mac Recovery Disk Utility nothing works.
It's clear that the disk is somehow contaminated – can it be recovered?
I am using Big Sur 11.6.3

It is a good chance your disk is defect. Some times I have had success with mounting disks internally. Open up the external and mount the disk internally. You will get SMART status then if the disk supports it.
