Are most USB external DVD burners compatible with OS X? I have a Mac Mini Server and am finding that I would like to have a reader/writer on it. I'm guessing that the one designed for the MacBook Air is compatible, but if I don't have to spend $100 on an external DVD burner I don't want to!

Suggestions? Recommendations?

Just get any USB DVD/CD drive. It should just plug in and work.

Recently I was salvaging parts from an old PC and took the built-in DVD burner out and put it in a $30 USB enclosure. Worked fine. If you have an old PC collecting dust you can do the same.

I use an old (2003) Sony DRX-500ULX (CD/DVD ReWriter). Has USB, Firewire, probably $20 on eBay. It's a single-layer burner, but I don't care about that.
