Is there any reason I'd pay the extra $40 to buy the SuperDrive over something non-apple like the $30 Samsung or LiteOn? Is there really any reason or difference in quality?

Agree with post above.

I wouldn't buy Apple's superdrive.

Instead, buy an external USB drive that has CD/DVD/BluRay -and- M-DISC capabilities. Will cost only a little more than an Apple drive, but have the ability to do much more.

Samsung makes a very nice drive in their "506" series.
Be aware it's a "tray loading" device -- which I prefer over "slot loaders"...

Also to add... the Apple Superdrive will not work on any Mac that has a built in optical drive. Go figure. o_O

There are ways around that, but yes, I would recommend just getting a Samsung/LG external. I own an Apple and Samsung drive, and the Samsung works just as well. It's also better because you can use different length USB cables, where the Apple one won't work with an extension cable and the cable is built in.
