im after an external ssd solution that works for both 6.1 and 5.1 with a speed over 1,000MB per second. I guess the only option is USB3 is there anything out there?

For MP61 you can use Thunderbolt or USB3. For MP5,1 you can only use USB3, and the better throughput will be around 400MB/s or so.
For 5,1
1) 10Gbps network card + any storage that can provide 1000MBps read / write with 10Gbps network interface (e.g. NAS).
2) installed something like a Sonnet Allegro Pro USB 3.0 PCIe card. Connect a USB 3.0 SSD to EACH of the USB port. RAID them all together.
Anyway, it can be done as long as the PCIe slots are there, and use it properly.
