I just upgraded a mac mini (Late 2009) from 10.8 to 10.10. It has an external hard drive (Hitachi) attached via FW800.

After upgrading to 10.10 the external hard drive will not go to sleep when I put the system to sleep. I did not have this problem before the upgrade.

Has anyone heard about this for Yosemite?

System info:
Macintosh HD: Hitachi
Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4GB 1067 MHZ DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB
External HD Case: OWC Mercury Elite

The problem with FW800 started with Mavericks. Apple believes the Oxford chipsets have the potential for data corruption so no fix is coming. Consider investing in usb3.

I plugged in a usb cable to the external hard drive and it goes to sleep when the system goes to sleep now.

I do not understand why a mac mini with an external drive connected via FW800 cable would not work.

I have an iMac(27") running Yosemite with a Drobo connected via FW800 and that is working just fine.
It goes to sleep and wakes up without any issues.
