External Hard Drive Asks for Authentication

I'm quite new to the Mac world so maybe you can help me. I'd appreciate it. As soon as I put my Time Machine back up on my new external hard drive, it always asks for Touch ID or my password whenever I put a new folder on it or rename a folder or change anything on it. Is it not possible to put other files on an external hard drive with the back up on it or what do I have to do?

While you can put other files alongside your Time Machine backup, you will have to authenticate with password. However if you create a folder on the drive, you can then add files to that folder without a password.

Note: it's not recommended that you store files in the Time Machine drive. They will not be backed up. If you do decide to partition the drive as recommended in these links, if your Time Machine is new, it would be easier and quicker to erase the drive then partition. Partitioning a drive with Time Machine that has a long history can be extremely long.
