External Hard Drive [iTunes copies files?]

Hi,

i recently got a mac mini, i have reformatted the external hard drive and moved all my music from the external hard drive onto my iTunes (i did this on my windows computer to save space on the internal disk) but the move seems to have copied over the files onto the main disk from the internal which kind of defeats the purpose of me having the external hard drive (other than a backup) is there something i am doing wrong? Thanks to any that can help.

If you don't want iTunes to copy the files, in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced uncheck these boxes:

In the iTunes Media folder, indicated just above the checkboxes on the same tab.
