External hard drive limitations?

I had a maxtor external firewire/usb 160 gb drive and then it broke. I ordered another 320 gig drive and replaced the dead 160 gb drive in the maxtor. When I plugged the drive into my macbook (core duo) it recognized only 128 gigs. When I plug this drive into a Windows XP, or Ubuntu linux machine, they both see all 320 gigs of the drive. I am hooking the drive up via firewire, but have also tried usb. Is this a limitation of OS X, a driver, the maxtor? Has any one else experienced this, or have a solution/workaround?
