Just upgraded to 10.10.5 and now my external hard drive is not showing in finder BUT it shows up in disk utility. It's mac os extended journaled and was working perfectly on 10.10.4 and before...Anyway to fix this without losing my data ?

How is the drive formatted? Is it Apple Extended Format (Journalled) or is it a Windows format like FAT32 or NTFS?

It it is in the Apple Format, run Repair Disk on it.

it's os extended journaled , will running "repair disk" damage or delete any of the data on the partition ? I'm afraid of losing any of the data if repair disk doesn't work..

Can you try it on a different mac, it might be a problem with the usb rather than drive.

It won't be the drive then, the problem is the usb hardware in your mac, or driver/firmware problem.
