Anyone else having issues with external Hard Drives on Yosemite? I have one plugged in per USB and it shows the drive but when I open it it seems "empty" for a couple minutes until it finally loads it's content. Once thats done if I navigate to the next folder it takes minutes again until that content is loaded. Eventually Finder will crash.

Anyone? Thanks!

No problems here. Been using a external hard disk for regular use and timemachine backup in both beta 1 and dp 5.

1. What format is the hard drive?
2. Have you tried it with another Mac?

No issues here with external drives. In fact, I'm booting into Yosemite from an external USB drive (which ain't the speediest way to do it).

Figured out that it was my external hard drive being very slow... When I open it in Disk Utility it shows the hard drive, but the partitions are greyed out. I am currently running check volume but that takes ages since the hard drive is sooo slow. Any advice? 30.000 pictures are on the edge of being lost forever. This would be my very end :'(

Thanks!

I've had this exact same problem. Drive is visible, but can't seem to connect. Finally, after several minutes, it usually connects.

Hard drive is connected to an Apple Airport. I know it works, because I can watch movies on my Apple TV and I can read the drive on my iPhone.

Would be great if anyone figures this out. Thanks.

I'm also having this problem. Using a 2TB WD external drive, usb 2, connected to a brand new iMac. The drive was fine for me through Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks on my old MBP, and for the past month or so was okay on the iMac; now with the latest Yosemite update it has gone insanely sluggish. The drive is about 75% full, so wonder if that is part of the issue, but the problem did pop up rather suddenly. Sometimes, if I wait long enough, the drive will mount, but as the OP complained it will take several minutes to display the contents of any given folder. I'm currently in the process of trying to back-up this data, and Finder tells me it will take 16 hours to transfer a 30gig folder. At this rate i'm looking at a month or more running full-time to save my files, and I'm scared the drive might completely burn up before then. Any guess at what's wrong or how I might more efficiently get the data to a new drive would be appreciated.

I have one attached to my Extreme and have problems with it showing up in Finder and with Time Machine use. Time Machine often can't find it. I can usually get it going, but it's a hassle.

Same issue with several external drives

I've had the same or likewise issues. After having Yosemite installed two of my external drives has "died" - not able to mount, nor format in Disk Utility. I've never had problems with these drives before - and I do not think it's just a random coincidence.
Helped my brother in law formatting his external ex-windows drive to Mac in Disk Utility on his MacBook Pro running Yosemite with the same issue. Drive gone bad - Disk Utility not being able to fix it.

I'm afraid this is one of the bad bugs of Yosemite, not yet fixed...

This is a BUG ... serious Bug ... affect HFS+, NTFS, ExFat, FAT32, etc ... in USB 2.0, USB 3.0 or Firewire 400 ... I don't know if affect Thunderbird or firewire 800.

I'm struggling with this problem a few days.

I was in NTFS and the external disk disappeared in USB and Firewire and then later in the disk utility came with the same message that all narrated.

I reformatted to HFS +, I put the firewire and was stable for a few days. Did the Yosemite updates and external disks disappeared and never came back .. in fact ... come back and present the problems narrated on the disk utility.

I took to the Windows PC and installed the Apple HFS Driver (http://www.markc.me.uk/WebSiteDownloads/AppleHFS.zip / has the apple also comes with the boot camp) ... and miraculously the files are all there and reading is completely normal and stable.

Only difference: drivers!

Best Regards.
