External hard drive to internal hard drive?

I am going to upgrade my macbook's hard drive. I am thinking about buying
the 160G western digital external usb hard drive and put it into my macbook internally. This way I do not have to buy an internal hard drive and an external enclosure separately, which costs more. But I could not find any information about what kind of hard drive is in the western digital hard drive. Is there any where I can find out if the hard drive in the external hard drive is suitable for my macbook???

i dont think you will be able to get it open that easily, i know the Western digitlal mybooks dont have any screws of any kind on the outside

and you can get a 2.5" sata150 160gb wd drive, for about 95 bucks and an enclosure for about 20..go that route

personally id spend the extra 80 bucks and go for the 250gb

Best buy is the Western Digital 250GB Scorpio separate links to product and price sites for $192. Then just buy a 2.5" External SATA enclosure for the one in your MacBook for $25.

200G or 250G is bit to expensive for me, so I would like to buy 160G with inclosure but I have too much choices Hitachi, Samsung, seagate, and western digital.? which one is the better? hitachi is little bit pricey compared with others so I like Samsung one the most. What are some experts choices??

I personally like the Hitachi drives. I upgraded my Powerbook to a 120GB ATA and my Macbook to a 160GB Sata and bought an additional Hitachi 160GB drive and put it in this housing for backups.

Yes you CAN!!

I just found out that the NEW Western Digital external USB HDD (2.5 inch) comes with SATA drives inside of them. So I went out this week to go get a 250 GB external USB drive from circuit city on sale for $169.99. That was a heck of a deal, since you don't need an external enclosure. Now I'm not sure about 160 GB drives, but the 250 GB version had the SATA drive inside. I would think that the 160 GB version would also. But for a few bucks more, why not just get the 250 GB version? All I did was:
1. Attach USB drive and run disk utilities. Erase disk (format) the external drive with mac os journal (or something like that, it was the first choice). And you can name the drive other than "Macintosh HD" at this point.
2. Download Superduper and copy my HD over to the USB drive. This will take a while.
3. Take the WD USB drive apart. Just pry at the seams and it will snap apart. You might break or bend a few tabs but it won't matter too much.
4. take the batt off the macbook and remove the ram bay cover. remove the harddrive. Remove the HD carriage with torx driver (you can use a small flat tip also if it's the right size). put the new drive on the carriage.
5. re-insert the drive and put the ram cover back on. Put the battery back. Reboot the machine. If all goes well (mine did), you are good to go. may have to re-arrage your desktop icons again though.
