External harddrive not activated

Hi!

I want to make a back-up from my macbook because it needs to be totally reset.
I formatted my harddrive because it was an NTFS harddrive from my old windows computer.
Next I wanted to reset the harddrive from NTFS to something (journaled?) so my mac was able to read the harddrive. So I followed the steps I'd found online and now I'm not able to read or activate the harddrive.
Does anyone know how this is possible and what I have to do?

See the popup menu in the upper-left-hand corner?
Change it to "show all devices" (if you didn't do this already)
Then try again.

You want "Mac OS extended with journaling enabled".
