i have bought a 70gB extarnal hard drive which is suitable for windows and mac devices. I can transfer to and from the drive on my windows pc but on the emac it won't let me . It says in permissions 'read only'. Is there any way I can change this thanks steve

It's probablyformatted NTFS, which Mac OS can read but not write. There are addons for OSx that allow read and write. MACFuse and NTFS-3G is the name, but search google.

Thanks for your advice. I omitted to say I am running 10.3.9 and it looks like the software requires 10.4

how do i format the extarnel drive in FAT32
cheers

In the Disk Utility, select the volume you want to format, switch to the "Erase" tab and change the "Volume Format" dropdown to FAT32.

Thanks Dannysmurf. Tried but all I got is partition tab, everything else greyed out
