Im want to get an external hard drive when I buy my MBP. I want to load bootcamp onto it and mainly play games on it. Should I go with Firewire 800 or 400??? and Which one should I get? Also i want it to be around 160-250 gigs.

thanks

WD MyBook Pro - 500 GB. Comes with USB2/FW800/400, is virtually silent, fantastic performace and has some cool features. Fairly sure you can daisy-chain them via FW800 too.

It looks great and is pretty cheap.

Definately recommended. ;)

Awesome , I was just about to make a thread on this topic. That WD MyBook Pro is pretty cool but are there any smaller alternatives that still keep intune with the simplistic design of the MBP.

I love my Lacie 250 gig ... runs around $180, but has been consistently functional (and pretty sexy too, I think). I connect to my PB via FW 800 and data moves fast enough.

OWC / Macsales.com has some pretty good ones. Never purchased them but it's on my list after doing some research. Probably would stay away from the RAID configs.

I've got La Cie 250 GB and 500 GB external hard drives for use with my iMac and MBP, and they have always worked just great for me. When I travel I use the La Cie "Rugged," which is 80 GB (I believe they also have a 160 GB version), as it is small and easy to stick into luggage or laptop bag.

i 2nd the lacie rugged (i have 120gb)....I back up everything on it and it is very light and smaller than I thought it was in the pictures.

I was in the Apple store today and saw that they now carry the sexy-looking G Technology G-Drives, so I couldn't resist....picked up one for my Mac Pro, as it will look so nifty with it! They had only the 250 GB drive and smaller ones, not the 500 GB that I really would have preferred. This will do me nicely, though for what I have in mind and right now it is busily backing up photo files that I hadn't done recently..... Now I will sell one of my La Cie drives to a friend who has been needing/wanting one.

I just got a Western Digital MyBook pro edition 500gb.

Superb drive, really fast with firewire 800, looks cool and is very quite. Only cost me £130 - bargain, dropped £60 this month.

I had been looking at external drives also, mainly to do backups, but I wanted to way the enclosure size / gb / cost to get the most without going to big (want to carry it with MBP). One thing I am unclear on, most of the drives say USB powered, but when you start getting 350gb and above they don't say that. Are 'most' 350gb+ drives still powered by USB/Firewire or do they require a power adapter?
