I am thinking about gettting a external hard drive. I have a windows pc right now with UBS 2.0 ports but no fireware. I am going to get a macbook in august when I move to California for college. So I need an external hard drive that can work with both windows and mac to ship over all my current files. I don't know wether to get a UBS or fireware external hard drive. I heard that the fireware ones are better but I would need to get one that has both UBS and fireware if I were to want to use the fireware for the macbook. Also I don't think I will need more than 120GB of memory, so what type of external hard drive should I get.

LaCie make drives that are FIREWIRE 400/800 and USB 2.0. You will need to format the drive with a filesystem that both can read and write to.

Considering the MacBook only has FW400 though it will probably be a better (cheaper) idea to just get a USB 2.0 drive.

If your desktop uses USB, your safest bet would be to get a USB external drive to transfer files between that and a MacBook. They normally come formatted to work for both, although you can reformat in a number of different formats.
I just purchased a LaCie USB 2.0 160 GB drive. So far, so good. Although, it wouldn't be a bad idea to shop around.
