Yes and no. If you are asking if you can hook up an external hard drive directly to the :apple:TV and play back movies from there, then the answer is "No."

If you are asking if you can hook up an external hard drive to your computer system and then stream those movies to the :apple:TV, then the answer is "Yes." Just make sure the "alias" to the movie is in iTunes.

Also do i have to convert all my AVI file to Mpeg 4 to play

This one's easy:
YEP. Get busy!

That makes me sad

It makes me verrrrrryyyy sad.....it is going to take forever to convert the files....In terms of the external hardrive.....All i have to do is connect my external hardrive to my comp and i am good?

then the answer is "No."

Thats interesting, I watched a avi divx movie last night from a 500gb attached to the usb port of my apple tv last night. Oh, yea...I forgot its hacked. Go here http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page and read. I did take mine apart to access the drive, it was really easy though, but i hear there is a way to hack it without taking it apart. It is not as smooth as a stock atv but i can do all sorts of things with it now. I can even stream drives from my airport extreme and manage my atv file with the finder. GOOD Luck!

Hack up this, Loogie

Good luck is truly all you'll need. If you are interested in voiding your warranty.

Correct me if I am wrong but....

You must have missed the memo. Just open your avi files in quicktime and do a save as normally (alowing dependancies). This is basically a 1Mb shortcut file that can be added to your iTunes library. It will then play your avi files right within iTunes and AppleTV as well.

No conversion required at all. :p
